Japanese Calligraphy Class - Term 4

Join us at Sakura Japanese Culture Centre from 4pm or 5pm on Thursdays starting 16th of October, 2025!

Warm months when we feel more positive is the perfect time to start learning something new or taking up a hobby.

Maiko will teach how to transform your handwriting into beautiful Japanese characters including hiragana, katakana and kanji, encouraging participants to learn brush and ink handling and how to make the expressive form.

These sessions are suitable for any skill level and the cost covers all materials - no extra costs will be added.

THURSDAY 4-5pm / 5-6pm

●27th November - learning how to write "Nengajou" (年賀状), Japanese New Year's card 

●4th December

●11th December - learning how to make "Iwaibashi" (祝箸), Celebration chopsticks, to go with the New Year cuisine

●18th December - learning about "Kakizome" (書き初め), the first writing of the year, and pick your favourite characters to get ready for 2026

What we learn:

Calligraphy session (with a brush) for 45 minutes

Pen writing session or learning a Japanese seasonal song reflecting characters that participants practice at the calligraphy session for 10 minutes

Ages: 8 - 17 only

Location: Sakura Japanese Culture Centre,159 Macquarie St. Hobart TAS 7000

(The venue is located behind Legacy House in 159 Macquarie Street. Please walk down the lane way beside Legacy House to the ground floor of the rear building - the closest parking is The Centrepoint Carpark)

**Please do not attend the workshop if you are feeling unwell.

**Please note that if sessions are missed, refunds are not available. We may cancel a session if minimum participation (2 participants) is not reached - we will inform you a day prior to cancelling.
