Event description

Our unique plain English training has been designed to be a fun and dynamic conversation starter packed with targeted examples, activities and lots of post-it notes!

We believe that access to information is a basic need that hasn't yet been met for Australian CALD communities. It's time to stop talking about it and drive this change towards clear communication. For the sake of all Australians.

Who should attend?

This plain English training is designed for professionals who write content for Australian diverse communities. For example, professionals working in community engagement, cultural diversity and marketing within local and state government settings, as well as health promotion professionals who work in health and community organisations.

What will you learn at our plain English training in Sydney?

1. Introduction: The importance of plain language

Roll up your sleeves and get ready. Your journey to clear communication is about to start.

The shift to clear communication is not an easy one. Because the main barrier to plain language is not the skills but the will. We will kick-start the day discussing the most common objections to plain language and showcasing ways to overcome them while still being clear.

2. Strategies to create accessible content in any language

Now you are onboard. Relax and let us take you through the ins and outs of clear communication.

Plain language is not just about text editing. In our plain language workshop, we'll prompt you to brainstorm accessible ways to get information across. We'll discuss things like document structure, the role that images play in accessibility and the key elements of effective content.

3. Plain English principles and how to simplify existing content

Congratulations on making it this far, now you are ready to start writing your own plain language content. Let's get down to business!

We've set up a good foundation and everybody is ready to start the plain language revolution.

At this point, we'll go through the most important plain English techniques with real examples for attendees to practice. This is where the magic happens. The real revolution.

Plain language is a mindset game and, after our practice exercises, you will be all set to gradually build up your plain language skills independently.
