Public Session #2: Responding to Victims/Survivors of Family Violence from Culturally and Racially Diverse Backgrounds (CRP)

Working effectively with victim-survivors from culturally and racially diverse backgrounds requires more than cultural awareness—it requires an understanding of how migration, racism, systemic barriers, language, visa status, faith, family and community dynamics can shape experiences of family violence and access to support.

This practical training will strengthen participants' knowledge and confidence in recognising and responding to family violence through a culturally safe, intersectional and trauma-informed lens. Participants will explore the unique experiences of culturally and racially diverse victim-survivors, examine common barriers to seeking help, and learn strategies for providing inclusive, culturally responsive support while promoting safety and perpetrator accountability.

Participants will learn:

• How family violence can present in culturally and racially diverse communities.

• The impact of migration, settlement, racism and systemic barriers on safety and help-seeking.

• How to recognise and respond to forms of abuse that may be overlooked, including migration-related abuse, coercive control and social isolation.

• Practical strategies for culturally safe engagement, risk assessment and referral.

• How to reflect on personal and organisational practice to better support victim-survivors.

This training is suitable for practitioners across family violence, health, community, settlement, housing, education and social services who work with culturally and racially diverse communities.
