Fri, 21 Mar, 1pm - 2pm AWST

Event description

In a global context that has seen escalations of racial and religious-based violence; US President Trump targeting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives; racism against Indigenous Australians increasing after The Voice referendum; and the Human Rights Commission funding research into racism at Australian universities; we consider what Australia’s Anti Racism Framework, released last November, means for us.

This event for the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination brings together two leaders in equity and inclusion, Professor Shamit Saggar (Executive Director, Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (ACSES) and Associate Professor Mandy Downing (Dean, Indigenous Futures), to respond to a set of questions, followed by audience participation. Join us for an important discussion about what racism and anti-racism are, what the Framework proposes, and what initiatives we can take.

Speakers:

Associate Professor Mandy Downing (Curtin University, Dean, Indigenous Futures)

Professor Shamit Saggar (Executive Director, Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (ACSES))

Facilitator: Professor Farida Fozdar (Curtin University, Dean, Global Futures)

Where: The Lantern, Robertson Library, 7th floor

When: Friday March 21 (International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination), 1-2pm.

This event addresses SDG3, on Health and Wellbeing, SDG 10 on reducing Global Inequality and SDG 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Part of Curtin’s week of sustainable development events.
