About the night

The venue, Bucketty’s Brewing Co. Brookvale, is a warm and friendly environment, where you can mingle with friends, make new friends, relax with a beer, enjoy a meal and be entertained by the eclectic and talented storytellers. This event connects the community through the sharing of real stories. Enjoy drama, laughter and sometimes tears and have a chance to be a part of something different here on the Northern Beaches.

Please Note: Venue will be open from 5.15pm allowing time for you to order a meal and have a drink before the entertainment commences at 7pm sharp.

About the New Venue - Bucketty's Brewing Co, Brookvale

There is so much to learn about Bucketty's and its humble beginnings. It's a family owned business with much blood, sweat and tears making it what it is today.

I can't think of a better place for Story Room Aus to call home, after-all beer and stories are like peas in a pod, they just fit perfectly.

How to get to Bucketty's

The B1 will drop you on Pittwater Road, not far from Warringah Mall. It is a short walk down Orchard Road to number 26.

If you drive there is loads of free parking in the surrounding streets of Brookvale.

NB: If you going to have a few drinks, be sure to nominate a designated driver or grab a taxi or an uber. Safe travels

Meet the Storytellers (in no particular order)

Kate Forsyth

Dr Kate Forsyth is an award-winning author, poet, and storyteller. Her historical novels for adults include The Crimson Thread, a retelling of the myth of the minotaur set in Crete during World War II which The Washington Review called ‘a riveting tale of courage, love, and betrayal’; The Wild Girl, the story of the forbidden romance behind the Grimm brothers’ famous fairy tales which was named Most Memorable Love Story; and Bitter Greens, a reimagining of ‘Rapunzel’ which won the American Library Award for Best Historical Fiction.

Kate’s non-fiction books include Searching for Charlotte: The Fascinating Story of Australia’s First Children’s Author, written with the assistance of the Nancy Keesing Fellowship. It was longlisted for the 2021 Readings Non-Fiction Prize and commended in the 2021 Australian Society of Women Writers award. Her collection of essays on fairy tales, folklore and storytelling, The Rebirth of Rapunzel, won the Aurealis Convenors’ Award for Excellence and the William Atheling Jr Award for Criticism. Kate has also written Alchemy, a collection of poetry and reflections on creativity in collaboration with the Archibald-Prize-winning visual artist Wendy Sharpe.

Kate’s books for children include the Long-Lost Fairy-Tales collection, illustrated by Lorena Carrington, which reinvigorates little-known tales of wisdom, compassion, and courage for the modern-day reader. The first in the series, Vasilisa the Wise & Other Tales of Brave Young Women, won a silver medal in the Fairies and Folklore category of the 2018 Readers Favorite book awards in the US.

Voted one of Australia's Favourite Novelists, Kate has been called one of 'the finest writers of this generation’, and ‘quite possibly ... one of the best story tellers of our modern age.’

Colin Urwin

Colin Urwin is a modern-day Seanachaí. He writes, sings, performs monologues, and tells beautifully woven stories drawn from the local legend and folklore of his beloved Glens of Antrim in Northern Ireland. He has performed and facilitated workshops at festivals all over Ireland, UK, and much further afield internationally. He has recorded several albums of his own songs, recitations and stories, and his first book of folk tales is due for publication with Orkneyology Press in early 2023, with others due for release later in the year.

Rona Leventhal

Rona Leventhal from the USA has been a teller of tales, storytelling teacher, and an improvisational theatre/movement specialist for three decades. Her workshops are hands-on and fun, safely guiding people to explore and walk away with skills that are immediately applicable with the motivation to use them! She has presented workshops at storytelling, education, and library conferences nationally and internationally. Rona produced The Summer Storytelling Institute Program and has taught storytelling graduate courses for educators. She has an award-winning CD: Into the Dark: Stories from the Shadows and is co-editor of the award-winning book Spinning Tales, Weaving Hope: Stories of Peace, Justice and the Environment.

Noa Baum

Noa Baum was described by the Washington Post as someone who "spreads cultural truths that eclipse geopolitical boundaries...". Born and raised in Jerusalem, Noa now lives in Maryland USA . She is an internationally acclaimed storyteller, author, and coach. focusing on the power of storytelling to heal across divides of identity and build peace. She is the author of the award-winning memoir A Land Twice Promised and a picture book How the Birds Became Friends. Presentation highlights include: The World Bank, Kennedy Center; US Department of Defense; Mayo Clinic; The National Storytelling Festival, Fabula Festival, Sweden and many festivals, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, organizations, and congregations, and schools

Christine Carlton

Christine Carlton is a Storyteller and Educator who has performed and facilitated workshops throughout Australia and internationally. She loves how stories challenge, entertain, inform, develop and delight both the tellers and the audience. For over 35 years Christine has conducted workshops with groups of children and adults, organisations, and lectured in Story and Drama in Education at the University of Western Sydney. She also provides individual coaching and mentoring for people keen to expand their storytelling skills. Christine has been the Convenor for all of the 'Weaving Stories Together' - Sydney International Storytelling Conferences and is President of the Australian Storytelling Guild, NSW.

Christine Greenough

Christine, apart from being an Actor/Director/Producer, is also a professional Stand-Up Storyteller. In 1997 she co-founded the tandem storytelling company “The Talespinners”. The company performed between 1997 – 2016 to children and adults throughout Australia, Asia, UK and USA. During that time, she and her Storytelling partner, Sue Alvarez, co-created several multi-sensory and interactive “I Remember When” programmes for seniors in retirement villages and nursing homes.

Now telling solo, she is in demand to tell around the storytelling circuit. She has told at “Tales Told Live” in pubs around Sydney, “Generation Women”, “This is Totally…F..cked”. This year she opened and closed for “Chatterbox Live” at the Rocks for the Sydney Fringe.

One of her favourite gigs is right here for The Story Room where she was delighted to be asked to guest host the September program. Christine loves telling as well as listening to stories and to see the interaction of the audience as those stories take hold, entertain and hopefully, in some cases, inspire.
