At United Way WA our vision is a future where every person is empowered to grow, through education, financial stability and healthy living – the building blocks to a happy life. We tackle entrenched community issues by building a strategic network of local organisations from communities, government, business, non-profits and schools. Our mission is to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of complex social problems together.

THREE PILLARS SEMINAR SERIES

This seminar series focuses on each of our core focus areas; education, financial stability and healthy living and how complex issues around these topics present in our society. These events aim to ignite a conversation, increase understanding of these issues and how they affect life in WA, and educate on what we can do together to improve quality of life for our whole community.

Currently, there are an estimated 1.5 million Australians living in a state of chronic or persistent disadvantage and research shows that this number is likely to keep increasing without comprehensive and targeted early intervention programs. We know that change begins when we LIVE UNITED, and that building a better tomorrow starts today. Join us to hear more about how we can tackle these problems together.

PILLAR THREE: FINANCIAL STABILITY

Our community’s most vulnerable citizens are living without the financial stability required to access education, achieve general health standards and improve their quality of living.

Hear from our passionate panel discussing the barriers individuals face when trying to change their circumstances and the complex nature of this societal problem.

Professor Paul Flatau

Professor Paul Flatau is the Director of the Centre for Social Impact at the University of Western Australia. He has over 100 publications covering a broad range of fields including labour economics, the history of economic thought, and social policy. He has made significant contributions to the analysis of social and economic outcomes and social impact and the effectiveness of programs and interventions in a number of fields including poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and housing.

Bev Jowle

Bev Jowle is the current Executive Officer for the Financial Counsellors Association of WA, Board Member for the Consumer Credit Legal Service WA, CEO of South Coastal Women’s Health Services and Alliance Manager of Fremantle Family Support Network. Ms Jowle has a Graduate Certificate in Social Impact from UWA and a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and Youth Studies from ECU. With over 30 years’ experience in the Community Services sector and a strong interest in human rights and social justice, Ms Jowle is a passionate advocate for financial literacy and access to services.

Leah Watkins

Leah Watkins is Manager of the 50 Lives 50 Homes project; a collective impact project involving over 28 organisations working together to sustainably house and support the most vulnerable rough sleepers. With over 30 years’ experience in the community services sector, Ms Watkins has worked with young people, homeless people, mental health and drug users in both front-line and management positions. She also ran her own consultancy, Starfish Consulting and has over 15 years research experience in the UK and Australia; through which she has contributed to numerous projects and assisted organisations to evaluate, redesign and build new services.

Husna Jamal

Husna will be speaking on behalf of HESTA, the specialist industry Super fund dedicated to people in health and community services. HESTA stand up for others and are committed to creating better futures for their members, women and in fact, all Australians. Their mission is to make a real difference in the retirement outcome for every member. In 2015, HESTA launched their Reconciliation Action Plan, being the first Super fund in Australia to do so. They have also launched a Financial Inclusion Action Plan with the aim to improve financial resilience for Australians who need it most. Husna Jamal is the WA Member Education Manager and a passionate advocate of financial inclusion and equality.
