Event description

Understanding Challenging Behaviours in Children

with Michelle Maunder Occupational Therapist, SEED Paediatric Services

Early childhood educators proudly support child development, including building children's regulation skills, however this is becoming increasingly complex. This workshop will provide evidenced based information equipping educators with foundational knowledge for understanding of challenging behaviours, regulation and dysregulation, enabling them to support child regulation, connection and development.

Come learn about development; individual differences; regulation / dysregulation; self regulation and co-regulation; frameworks for responding to dysregulation; strategies to prevent and support challenging behaviours. When we understand the underlying cause of dysregulation and challenging behaviours, we can begin supporting students move towards building resilience, flexibility, social emotional skills that enable academic success.

Topics covered will include regulation / dysregulation through the lens of Polyvagal Theory; frameworks for responding to dysregulation; strategies to manage challenging behaviours in the moment and afterwards; as well as proactive approaches to avoid these situations. When we understand the role the nervous system plays in managing regulation and dysregulation, we are better positioned to avoid challenging behaviours and to support students to move towards building resilience, flexibility, social emotional skills that enable them to reach their potential.

Michelle aims to make the complex, simple, fun, interesting and memorable.
