Event description
When worship is with the Non-Churched - Jonathan Barker
About Jonathan
In the 90’s Jonathan was CEO/Minister of the Bondi Beach UCA Parish Mission whose ministry through the “Chapel By the Sea” served street people who were either unemployed, suffered addictions, had mental health issues or were just lost - often in more ways than one. This ministry led to Jonathan teaching a course at the United Theological College known as “Liturgies for the Unchurched”. In the wider community Jonathan found himself as de-facto chaplain to the wider Bondi Beach community often called upon to deliver all kinds of blessing or healing celebrations.

How does worship best happen when the participants are either totally unfamiliar with the essence of Christianity or have been alienated from the church usually due to gross judgmentalism? This session primarily reflects on the Bondi Beach “Chapel By the Sea” Sunday evening service which provided space for grieving, healing and empowerment with the aim of sharing the gospel of unconditional acceptance. What can be learned for fashioning an authentic worship experience of the universal God of profound love?
