Event description

1979, the Disco train was slowing and the roots of House music had already been laid. We explore the space between Disco and House music, that space when a COSMIC LEAP changed music forever and gave birth to the DJ.

Francois K's words describe it best:

"The thread that ties many of these different aspects of music somewhere in the late 70s and early 80s, what ties it all together : it's electronic. In other words, by late '79, '80,  '81, there was a definite trend towards stripping down records, it didn't just happen by accident , technology also had a lot to do with it, because right around that time we kind of saw how mainstream a lot of the music production techniques became when it involved having synthesizers in the mix, and though some records are still pretty funky and raw and played with live instruments, you can already see that the attitude is different. Add it to this, one of the key factors is, some of these records still have sort of a conventional vocal section and verse and chorus and all that. A whole breed of people started wanting to concentrate that essence, instead of waiting for the break to happen, forget the main vocal - forget everything - just make the break the whole song ! and this is exactly what started happening with people doing edits: taking the razor blade and chopping up pieces of tape to turn little pieces of isolated breaks and instrumental sections of records, turning them into full extended compositions that focused on the rhythm and became much more hardcore. From Chicago was a dj who started in the 70s called Ron Hardy, and for a lot of people perhaps more than anyone else, he really is credited as being the one who single-handedly helped define what became house music, what I am talking about is: concentrated essence of the good bits of a record and turn it into something that is much more hypnotic and intense it's like when you distil liquor, it gains intensity"
