COSMOPOLITAN.

Over seven days and four nights of live events, the Cosmopolitan exhibition program brings together artists, writers and collectives from Australia, Aotearoa, China, the USA and France, speaking to ‘the social’ in relationship to world-making, centres and peripheries.

Taking place at The Drill Hall in Darling Point, Sydney a former site of Navy use and administration for much of the twentieth century, and overlooking Sydney's infamous harbour, Cosmopolitan includes artists who, together, address our changing relationship to the divisions and interconnections between contentious notions of the local and the global. Subcultural aesthetics and expressions of community pushed up against the logic of globalisation.

At the entrance to the exhibition, under the thematic framework of Cosmopolitan, Spencer Lai invites artists from their artistic milieu to extrapolate on ideas of subcultural phenomena and their aesthetics. Hippies use the side door to enter the bazaar (2019) contextualises the work of these artists as an imagined cacophonous marketplace, or bazaar, calling upon the language of urban iconography as departure points to navigate expressions of malaise, ambivalence, community, idealism and utopia.

LOCATION DETAILS.

The Drill, 1C New Beach Rd, Darling Point (Rushcutters Bay), Sydney

The Drill Hall is a large two storey pale mustard painted corrugated iron building on the waterfront next to the Marina and yacht club at Rushcutters Bay. It is roughly opposite 42 New Beach Road.

Train: Closest station is Edgecliff, a 10 minute walk.
On-street parking available in surrounding streets

ACCESS DETAILS.

The Drill Hall has ramps in to the entrance and wide doorways.

Assistance animals are welcome, and drinking water is available.
