Description

Local Government workers from across 8 Metropolitan Melbourne Councils are taking a historic 24-hour Strike Action for fair wages and conditions on 5 May.

From 10:00am, workers and supporters will be meeting at the Victorian Trades Hall Council. At 11:00am, workers will march to Parliament.

The 24-hour Strike Action is a necessary escalation of this campaign for fair pay and conditions.

Why are we marching on Parliament?

The State Government, led by Jacinta Allan, has continued to defend the Rate Cap Policy which has suppressed wages for over a decade. The Allan Government has also shifted responsibility for essential service delivery to Councils underfunding them to crisis levels.

That's why workers will be marching on Parliament on budget day. We welcome service users - parents and kids of ECEC services, aged care users, community members to come along and show their support too!

Council workers, who provide essential services their communities need, should be treated with dignity and respect. This can only happen if they are paid fairly.

If you are Council Worker, or you believe workers at your local Council deserve fair pay, come join us!

FAQs

  • Which 8 Councils are covered by the strike action?

The Councils are Darebin, Greater Dandenong, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Merri-bek and Yarra.

  • I am an ASU member at one of the 8 Councils, can I stay home on the day of the action?

If you choose to stay home on the day of the action, your participation will have less impact. Unless your employer, the public, and the Allan Government see a mass of workers at this rally, their position will NOT change.

We are asking you to attend this rally to ensure it has the maximum impact.

  • I am an ASU member at one of the 8 councils, will I be paid if I go on strike?

Under the Fair Work Act, workers who go on strike cannot be paid for the time they spend on strike. If you participate in the 24-hour action, you will not receive one day of pay.

  • I am an ASU member at one of the 8 Councils, can I take Annual or Sick Leave so my pay isn't docked?

If you apply for Annual Leave or an RDO on the day of the action, your request will likely be rejected. Even if it is approved, your employer is likely to cancel it.

We strongly recommend you do not take Sick Leave on the day of the action unless you are genuinely sick and you provide your employer with a medical certificate. Your employer will suspect you are not genuinely sick if you choose to take Sick Leave on the day of the action.

  • I work at one of the 8 Councils but I am not an ASU member, can I participate?

No, you are not eligible to take strike action unless you are an ASU member. Even if you are a member of another union, you cannot participate in this action.

You can join the ASU here: Join the ASU.

  • I work at a different Council, can I participate in the rally?

If you would like to attend the rally but you do not work at one of the 8 Councils, you will need to attend on a day off or apply for Leave.
