Australia’s local government sector has been at the forefront of responding to climate change for decades. As one of the first sectors to understand how geographical regions can manage climate risk, councils championed the application of risk and vulnerability assessments - techniques that have since been adopted by other industries, such as building and infrastructure.
In recent years, however, identifying and assessing climate risk has become more complex. We know that we are no longer solely measuring the physical danger of a changing climate, but also the financial, reputational and legal issues and opportunities associated with the transition a low-carbon economy.
