Country As Teacher

For millennia, Country has been the central knowledge-holder in society, guiding people to live in relational reciprocity and maintaining social and ecological balance.

This workshop offers an introduction to Country as Teacher pedagogy and invites participants to begin considering its possibilities within Environmental Education. It provides a starting point for engaging with a way of knowing, being and doing that honours longstanding Indigenous knowledge systems.

In the workshop, we will:

·Explore the foundational ideas of a Country as Teacher pedagogy, based on the knowledge of Senior Custodian for Karulkiyalu Country, Damu (Grandfather) Paul Gordon

·Introduce the Learning Tree model as a way of understanding relationships between knowledge, practice and place

·Consider how this model might be enacted in educators’ own contexts and teaching practice

·Share emerging insights from research and practice in schools

A Country as Teacher pedagogy offers educators an opportunity to begin reflecting on how teaching practices might better honour place and foster deeper care and connection with the environments in which we live and learn.
