Welfare recipients from the Antipoverty Centre, Australian Unemployed Workers' Union, Anti-Poverty Network Queensland and Nobody Deserves Poverty are gathering at Parliament House in Canberra to mark the 5th anniversary of Scott Morrison announcing that some Centrelink payments would be increased by $550 a fortnight, bringing the JobSeeker payment to the Henderson poverty line as well as drastically improving the lives of people on Youth Allowance, Austudy and Parenting Payment. By contrast, this year on the same day 6-monthly indexation will add $3.10 a fortnight to the JobSeeker payment.
We welcome current and former welfare recipients as well as our supporters to join us for a meal and attend our press conference commemorating the day the government proved they can literally lift people out of poverty overnight. You do not need to speak to media or appear on camera if you don't want to, we would just love to have your company as we mark this historic event.
Arrive at parliament at 8:45am to be signed in. We will go to a cafe for food and coffee, then start the press conference at 10am. Afterwards we would love to talk to you more if you have time.
We will cover transport costs and food for people on low incomes. Everyone who attends will receive a high quality print of an original artwork by Judy Kuo marking the anniversary.
