AI in Architectural Practice: Integration, Diversification and Future Forecasting

This CPD session provides architects with a strategic overview of how artificial intelligence is reshaping professional practice, focusing on business integration, new service opportunities, and future industry trajectories.

Delivered across three focused presentations, the workshop examines AI not as a single tool, but as an emerging operational layer that impacts practice management, project delivery, risk, staffing, and professional positioning.

Speakers:

Paul Cooksey - Northern Edge Studio - ArchiTeam CPD committee chair
Michael Smith - Andever
Hamza Khan - HKlabs and Cox Architecture

Session

1. AI Integration into Business Practice

An overview of how AI is currently being adopted within architectural offices, including applications in workflow automation, documentation, research, communication, and decision support.
The "Cheat Sheet": This breakdown of various systems, tools, and approaches will assist any practice looking to introduce AI to their workflows.

2. AI Opportunities for Diversification and New Services

This segment highlights how AI can be used across the architectural knowledge base to empower our generalist skill set.
Case Study: Michael Smith explores how he is leveraging AI to expand beyond traditional fee structures with the establishment of Spec Rep Help Desk building systems to streamline the approvals process and build better buildings.

3. AI Future Forecasting

A forward-looking analysis of how AI is likely to impact procurement models, client expectations, staffing structures, and the designs of architects over the next 5–10 years.
Hamza Khan of HKlabs and Cox Architecture shows how he is using AI in his workflows and integrating AI into his design and documentation.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

Understand current and emerging roles of AI within architectural practice.
Identify opportunities to integrate AI into business systems and workflows.
Recognise potential new service models enabled by AI.
Develop informed perspectives on future risks, opportunities, and professional responsibilities.
