Time: 12:00–3:00 p.m.

Engage your creativity with a unique medium - perfect for capturing the details of the natural world!
Join Kelly Dix and learn how to create your own work of art using Sumi Ink on Ampersand Claybord, a modified scratchboard technique. This is a beginner-friendly class - no prior art experience necessary! We will learn about the process and materials, then practice the technique on small “practice" boards. The bulk of our time together will be spent creating beautiful works of art! We will be working from images of nature and wildlife. You will leave with a finished piece and all the information you need to practice, personalize, and perfect your own technique at home.
Claybord is a smooth kaolin clay panel, more durable than scratchboard, that can render ultra clean, crisp details and lines. It also permits control of tonal variations.
Materials: Be prepared to get ink on your hands – you might want to wear old clothes or an apron/smock for this class! We will have everything you need plus tea and hot cocoa.
Instructor: Kelly Dix is a naturalist and artist. Her artistic side reflects her naturalist passion with projects in photography and claybord. She co-teaches our Master Naturalist courses and works with MNHC on many additional projects including the Visiting Naturalist in the Schools program.
