Sydney’s Johnny Hunter have arrived at a time where the music industry yearns for an injection of grit and metallic rock charm, rolled into one. Their introduction in 2018 came shrouded in intrigue, dressed up in suits, flecked with make-up and brandishing a fresh stage attitude that rallied, engaged and intoxicated any audience in front of them.

A reaction to shared experiences and observations of living in the 21st century, Johnny Hunter was born for this group to express their observations on modern day living in a way that incites the energy in the pit of one’s stomach. Each live show is charged with a riotous, call-to-arms energy that leaves a Johnny Hunter crowd sweaty and hungry for more.

And yet, there is that sense of mystery that belies the music. Threads itself throughout each wisp of despondency and melancholy found in the music. The type of mystery is artistry that makes a band like Johnny Hunter such an intricate puzzle to solve.

As a group, they offer up a mirror to the changing times we live in through their music. In 2018’s ‘One Of A Kind’, ‘1995’, ‘Cult Classic’, and then 2019’s ‘Ashamed’ and ‘Pain & Joy’, the band demonstrates a raw response to navigating a world that is becoming more unhinged than ever. An unapologetic love for fiery, gut-punching punk energy, as well as pop songwriting to break a heart forms the foundation of their body of work, one that is still ever-changing as the band prepares for the release of their debut EP this year.

Named as one of Double J’s best on ground acts at BIGSOUND, the band has become a fast favourite around the country from sharing stages with artists including Jack White Press Club, City Calm Down, and Kirin J Callinan.

Live, Johnny Hunter is equal parts unfiltered anarchy and Bowie-esque cabaret. Matching high energy musicality with stagemanship that charms a crowd with ease, the band is a beast all its own as a performance unit. Individualistic and unashamedly fearless in their delivery, Johnny Hunter revels in each quirk, dark twist of eyeliner, slick back of a mullet and moan of a vocal.

A band who continues to mystify and seduce with music that keeps on elevating and diversifying, the new decade only means more opportunities to discover and perhaps delve deeper into the Johnny Hunter outlook on life.
