Worldbuilding for writers - learn how to create believable characters.
Participants will explore the fundamentals of writing a believable character through the lens of story arc, storyline and plot. Learn how to develop a point of difference in character building, the magic of backstory, defining goals and motivation, and using relatable emotions and experiences to make every word count. This workshop offers valuable suggestions for getting started to completion.
Learning outcomes
As part of this workshop, you will:
- Understand the importance of character backstory and how it influences character behaviour.
- Identify clear goals and motivations to drive the character’s actions and decisions.
- Learn how to develop complex characters with both strengths and weaknesses.
- Explore how relatable emotions and experiences make characters more engaging.
- How to develop characters to expand and drive the plot.
Format
This is a hybrid workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is designed with a focus on writers of fiction and narrative non-fiction, but is suitable for writers of all levels and backgrounds.
About Vicki
Vicki is an author, artist, filmmaker and writing mentor. She has written 36 books and written and co-produced a documentary, Never Forget Australia. Her writing career began with personal development books and has expanded to children’s books, young adult and adult fiction. Books include: I’ve Found the Keys Now Where’s the Car?
