Event description

A talk with Dr Christine Groom - Author of Creating a Black-Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs
We’re delighted to welcome Dr Christine Groom, conservation biologist and author of Creating a Black-Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs (UWA Publishing).
Christine’s book is a practical, easy-to-read guide showing how planning, landscaping, and gardening with Carnaby's and Black-Cockatoos in mind can help these endangered birds thrive, while creating greener, cooler suburbs for us all. Drawing on her extensive research and PhD on Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos in urban Perth, Christine translates science into everyday action, inspiring everyone from home gardeners to planners, schools, and community groups.
Christine is a member of BirdLife Australia and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. She lives in the Perth Hills, where Carnaby’s cockatoos regularly visit her garden to feed on the banksias and hakeas she planted for them. Her work bridges ecology and landscape design, showing how foraging, roosting, breeding, and commuting habitats all link together to support these remarkable birds.
In this talk, Christine will share insights from her book and her years of research, offering a fascinating look into the lives of Carnaby’s cockatoos. She’ll discuss how each of us can make a real difference through the way we design and plant our gardens.
📚 Copies of Christine’s book will be available for purchase on the day, which would make a fabulous Christmas gift!.
🎫 Bring some change as a raffle is being held, with the incredible prize of a $150 gift voucher, kindly donated by Waldecks!  I can’t thank the Waldeck’s group enough for their generosity ❤️
🖤🤍🖤Hosted by Cans for Carnaby’s with all money raised going directly to supporting our Black-Cockatoos!
