Description

You’ve got a style. You’ve got taste. You can make great images when you’re shooting for yourself.

Then a “real client” shows up… and suddenly you’re second-guessing everything.

They want something safe. You want something honest.

They say “make it more me” but can’t explain what that means.

And now you’re trying to keep your aesthetic alive while also delivering what they actually need.

This workshop is built for that exact moment.

Fashion photographer Gracie Steindl will break down how she photographs artists, personalities, and real people in a way that feels flattering, confident, and still true to her visual world. We’ll cover how to translate a vague brief into clear creative direction, how to run a proper pre-production conversation, and how to keep control of the shoot without turning it into a power struggle.

This is a live demo session, not a hands-on shoot for attendees.

We’ll be working through a real client-style scenario on the night, so you can see how the communication, direction and decision-making actually plays out in real time.

What you’ll learn

You’ll walk away with a practical framework for:

  • Getting clarity from clients who don’t know how to explain what they want

  • Running a pre-production interview that saves your shoot (and your edit)

  • Marrying your style to the client’s needs without watering yourself down

  • Directing people so they look and feel good on camera (without awkward posing)

  • Making choices that keep your final images consistent, even when the brief is messy

We’ll open with Gracie’s approach to shooting people professionally — how she reads a brief, keeps a consistent aesthetic, and makes talent look great.

Then we’ll break down the client conversation: what to ask, how to find the real goal, how to get alignment, and how to avoid the usual miscommunication traps.

After that, we move into a live demo using a real client-style scenario, showing direction, flow, and how decisions get made on the spot.

We finish with Q&A and practical next steps you can apply to your next paid shoot.

FAQs

  • Who should attend?

Photographers who want to shoot more portraits commercially — artists, creators, influencers, brand talent, founders, or anyone who needs images that look polished and feel real.

  • Is this a hands-on shooting workshop?

Not quite, this is demo-first. Gracie will be teaching her process and decision-making, and she’ll shoot a client to show how it all comes together in real time. You’ll absolutely learn practical steps, but it’s not a “everyone shoots the model” style class.

  • What will I actually take away from this?

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of working with clients and an idea of what the process is to iterate and understand what they're after, making them feel relaxed whilst also delivering a result that you're both happy with.

  • Do I need to bring a camera?

No. A camera isn’t required. Most people will get more out of this with a notebook and a pen, notes however will be provided via download link after.

  • Will I get the slides/presentation afterwards?

Yes! The presentation will be provided as a downloadable link after the workshop.

  • Will there be Sony gear to try?

Yes, we’ll have Sony gear on hand for attendees to get a feel for. Bring your own memory card (SD/CFexpress Type A) so you can actually shoot and take files with you.

  • Do I have to shoot Sony to attend?

No. The workshop is about taste, aesthetic, and creative decisions, it applies to every system.
