Event description

Mikaela Castledine is an award-winning artist and published writer. She has been a professional artist for over 30 years, working in collage and sculpture. She is best known for her crochet sculptures of animals and architecture but also uses collage, carved timber and recycled objects in her work. She has won many awards including at Sculpture by the Sea in 2013, 2017 and 2020, the prestigious Mandorla Art Award in 2018 and the Mid West Art Award 2021.

In this session Mikaela will discuss what a residency is, how to get one and what to do with it once you have it. What makes a good residency and what makes a good resident for both artists and for providers.

In 2015 Mikaela was looking at gaps in her CV and decided that she needed to add some residencies to it. But she didn’t actually know what a residency was, what it was meant to deliver and why she needed to try and get one. Nine years and ten residencies later she now has the answers to many of these questions.
