Third time’s the charm! Crip Rave Theory is back and outside, with an day to night party as a public program during April Phillip's Body Place exhibition.

Crip Rave Theory is both a party and a proposition: drawing on disabled/ crip knowledge to create more intersectionally-accessible rave spaces. In response to inaccessible and exclusionary club spaces, Crip Rave Theory centres and celebrates all bodies that are sidelined in traditional nightlife culture; a space for community, connection, pleasure and self-expression.

About Body Place:

Body Place is an immersive exhibition with an interactive digital world built on First Peoples knowledges, experimental processes, and new technologies. Experience a gamified story cycle of intergenerational healing – led by Wiradjuri-Scottish artist April Phillips, with Pat Younis, Jordan East, Warren Foster Jnr., Mark Leahy and Alvin Zhong.

April Phillips is a Wiradjuri-Scottish woman of the Galari peoples, based on the Yuin Nation. April is aligned with representations of Indigenous futurism and intergenerational healing to celebrate the potential of computer art for a new world.

In real time, the companion sky spirit takes the audience for a celestial virtual walk on Country – from the depths of subterranean soils, to a ground-level play space, ascending to meet the clouds.

Leveraging boundary-pushing technologies, Body Place combines real-time person tracking and motion capture. This allows audiences to roam an expansive illuminated 14-metre screen, in Utp’s purpose-built space.

Access Notes:

TRANSPORT

Public Transport – Utp is located very close to Bankstown train station. It is 300 metres, and about a 7-minute walk away. There are several crossings on this walk. Please beware that the Dale Parade car park generally has cars coming in multiple directions.

Parking is available at the Olympic Parade car park. There is also a minibus drop-off zone at Dale Parade, 25 metres to the Arts Centre's main entrance.

If you arrive after 6:30 and the front automatic door is closed, please access the Arts Centre via the back gate through the Olympic Parade car park.

VENUE

Wheelchair Access – You can enter the Arts Centre via the front of the building at Dale Parade. There is a lift that can take you from ground level to the courtyard. There is a ramp to get to all rooms but there is no ramp into the inner grassy courtyard. The step down from the courtyard is around 10cm high.

We will maintain wide and clear pathways at this event.

There will be a sensory chill-out zone, for rest and recharging.

Accessible and all-gender bathrooms are in the foyer of Bankstown Arts Centre. There are also two more that can be accessed via Rehearsal Rooms 1, 2 and the Theatre. They are equipped with a handrail and an assistance button. A baby-change station is available in the foyer bathroom.

Guide Dogs and support animals are welcome at Utp and Bankstown Arts Centre. You can take them into RS1.

COVID SAFETY

This party is taking place exclusively outdoors in the open air, with the exception of the lower sensory/chill space.
There will be masks and hand sanitiser available on site. We encourage you to bring your own masks; as they will be better tailored to your individual requirements.
For the safety of our immunocompromised community, we encourage masking indoors.

AUSLAN SPEAKERS

AUSLAN interpreters will be on site between 5-7pm. Details to come. They will be interpreting the Welcome to Country, the housekeeping address, and will also be available for social interpreting – please make yourselves known to them at the event if you require this.

EVENT INFO

There will be a Welcome to Country in the afternoon (time to be announced). In order to ground yourselves appropriately, we recommend arriving early to experience this.

The first hour of the party is when we will have capacity to support solo partiers to make new friends. It is also a great time for people to arrive who want to ease into the event more gently.

Seating and matting will be available in the courtyard, and inside the chill space.

There will be a marquee covering the DJ decks and some of the dance space.

No strobe or haze will be used.

Guide Dogs and support animals are welcome & water provided.

There will be party support people on the night, to keep things accessible, safe and fun. They can assist with things like carrying food and drinks to people as required, supporting people to navigate the space, and assisting with car drop-off/pick up zone. They are also the people you should contact on the night if you experience or witness anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.
