Critical Emergency Presentation: Collapsed Patients & Anaphylaxis and Respiratory Emergencies
Event description
Animal Emergency Service Tanawha are excited to invite you to an upcoming seminar designed to enhance your confidence and skills in managing two critical emergency presentations—the collapsed patient (including anaphylaxis) and respiratory emergencies.
🔹 The Collapsed Patient & Anaphylaxis
From shock and cardiac issues to neurological and metabolic causes, we’ll explore the critical steps in assessing and stabilising a collapsed patient. Special focus will be given to anaphylaxis, recognising the subtle and severe signs, and how to act swiftly with the best treatment protocols.
🔹 Respiratory Emergencies
When every breath matters, understanding how to recognise and intervene in respiratory distress is crucial. We’ll cover conditions such as upper airway obstructions, pulmonary oedema, pleural space disease, and more, discussing oxygen therapy and life-saving interventions.
As per previous seminars, we’ll be running two dedicated streams—one for Vets, presented by our AES ECC Resident, Dr Matt Hollindale, and our Veterinarian Dr Gabrielle Capell, and one for all the Vet Nurses, led by our incredibly talented AES Senior Nurse Amanda Atkinson.
📍 Location: RSL Maroochydore
⏰ Time: 5:30pm for 6:00pm start, concluding 9:15pm
🥂 Light dinner and drinks provided
This is a fantastic opportunity for Vets and Vet Nurses to refine their emergency approach, ask questions, and engage with experienced colleagues in a supportive environment.

We can’t wait to spend the evening with you.
About Our Speakers
Dr Matt Hollindale
The Collapsed Patient & Anaphylaxis
Dr Matt is a Sunshine Coast local with a passion for emergency veterinary care. After graduating from the University of Queensland in 2014, he spent five years in general practice across the Gold and Sunshine Coasts before discovering his true calling in emergency medicine. In 2020, he joined AES and never looked back, embracing both the fast-paced nature of emergency work and the rewarding lifestyle it offered. His dedication led him to achieve Memberships in Emergency & Critical Care in 2022, earning the ECC Chapter Prize for his excellence in the field. Taking his expertise even further, Dr Matt began an ECC residency under Dr Rob Webster and Dr Ellie Leister, trading his beloved emergency vet lifestyle for the rigorous demands of specialist training. At home, he's kept on his toes by his mischievous tortoiseshell cat, a ragdoll, and a golden retriever - a lively trio that ensures there's never a dull moment!
Dr Gabrielle Capell
Respiratory Emergencies
Dr Gabby graduated from James Cook University in 2015 and quickly found her passion in Emergency & Critical Care (ECC). After a brief time in mixed practice, she transitioned to ECC in 2016, working at JCUVet in Townsville before moving to Brisbane to join the AES Underwood and Jindalee teams. In 2019, Dr. Gabby took her expertise abroad, working as an ECC locum in the UK before returning home to AES Tanawha in 2020, where she continues to provide exceptional care to critically ill and injured pets. At home, Dr. Gabby shares her life with an anxious Golden Retriever cross and two rescue cats, ensuring she's just as dedicated to animal care outside of work as she is in the clinic!
Amanda Atkinson
With 25 years of experience in the veterinary industry - 16 of them at AES - Amanda is not just a senior veterinary nurse; she's a dedicated mentor, an emergency care expert, and a passionate advocate for animals. Her journey began on a farm, where her love for animals was sparked at an early age. She started as a kennel hand in a veterinary practice, studying while working to become a fully qualified veterinary nurse. Over the years, she has gained extensive experience in mixed practice, emergency, and critical care, making her an invaluable member of our team. Amanda thrives in the fast-paced world of emergency medicine, whether handling urgent cases at the crash bench or supporting pet owners through difficult times. She's also deeply committed to mentoring and training the next generation of veterinary nurses, ensuring they have the skills and confidence to succeed. Outside of work, Amanda has a heart for rescue animals - she shares her home with six rescue cats and a flock of feathered friends. When she's not saving lives, you'll find her enjoying the outdoors, soaking up the sun at the beach or exploring off-road in her 4WD. Amanda's experience, passion, and dedication make her an inspiration to all in the industry!
