New Zealand is a ‘super-diverse’ nation, nearly 30% of our population were born overseas. In this increasingly multicultural society, it is essential to be culturally competent and sensitive; especially when officiating weddings, funerals, and other life celebrations.
Celebrants have a pivotal role in creating meaningful ceremonies that acknowledge and honour the traditions, beliefs, and wishes of those they serve. They are encountering a growing number of different ethnicities and wish to grow their cross-cultural awareness and knowledge, deepen their understanding of practises and protocols in different cultures and enhance skills for engaging with families from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
This vis à vis training workshop will give participants the opportunity to
- Self-Reflect on personal cultural identities and the impact of individual beliefs and values.
- Increase awareness and understanding of the relevance of cultural factors in different settings and interactions.
- Learn about local demographics and trends regarding ethnic diversity.
- Explore norms and rituals surrounding weddings, funerals, and other life events and hear examples of customs, beliefs, protocols and rituals in different cultures.
- Gain insights into Do’s and Don’ts when dealing with people from diverse cultural & religious backgrounds to approach their ceremonies with respect and cultural awareness.
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE:
1.2 Identify and address client needs at all times ensuring respect and confidentiality of the client.
1.3 Target communication styles to build rapport with clients
1.4 Consider the design of ceremony including incorporating client needs, defining purpose of ceremony, and consideration of other factors impinging on ceremony.
2.2 Identify the significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the development and delivery of services.
3.1 Participate in CANZ Professional Development opportunities.
AGENDA:
9.30am: Arrival and refreshments
10am: Cultural workshop commences and will continue to 12.45pm with a comfort break around 11.15am
1pm: Lunch
1.45pm: APM
2.15pm: Guest speaker (TBC)
