Music in Exile warmly invites you to the second Crossings at High Note, an open slate for exchange and convergence ~ of cultural and lived experiences, of musicking and performance practices, and of making, eating, and sharing.

Selected musicks from Yus.f, Playte & Sisterdeep in the afternoon, with Max's Chicken Shop pop-up outside. Moving into the evening for intimate collaborative performances from MIE alumni Mindy Meng Wang & Sui Zhen, and a new exchange between Mastaneh Nazarian & Karyme.

About the artists:

Live

Daryoosh Karimi is a sound artist and designer based in Melbourne. Born and raised in Tehran, he migrated to Australia over a decade ago. Karimi’s practice encompasses electroacoustic composition, computer music, and algorithmic instruments through audiovisual performance, installation, and compositions for moving image.

Mastaneh Nazarian is a musician, teacher and founder of re: sound music services. She creates music using various electro-acoustic components, performing on oud and often using poetry as source material for compositions.

Mindy Meng Wang is a Chinese/Australian composer and contemporary performing artist. From high-profile to exploratory, she has pioneered the Guzheng into contemporary landscapes; experimental, jazz, western classical, pop, and all the improvisational spaces between.

Becky Freeman is a Chinese-Malaysian ‘Australian’ artist, musician and creative producer working across audio, visual and the interactive. Her Sui Zhen project examines loss on many levels, from the death of loved ones to the widespread societal tendency to disappear in the 1’s and 0’s of modern life's tech-driven obsessions.

Food

Max is a chef of Pākehā/Ngāpuhi/Ngāti Kahu descent. She was born and raised here on Boonwurrung country, where she’s been cooking professionally for 5 years. "Cooking for community is how I show up. I love feeding people because I think it’s the most sincere act of care there is, and it’s a huge privilege to be able to do that."

DJs

Yus.f is a DJ, producer, and co-founder of local label Electronic Selections. With formative years in Brisbane/Meanjin’s music scene as a live musician, studio engineer, and producer, Yus.f channels a love of raw, unfiltered groove and atmospheric psychedelia into sets that balance euphoria with focus.

Playte are a gastro-architect duo who use local food as a tool for collective healing. Exploring the space and politics between art, architecture, and food, it was founded by Niyanta Sharma, an artist and architectural designer of Indian heritage, and Wesley Hauler-Winterford, a nutritionist and cook of Māori heritage.

Tanisha is a musician, DJ, producer, vocalist and artist with roots stretching from Ghana to so-called Australia. She is the founder of Akoma Nkoso, a creative platform for diasporic sound, ceremony and exploration. Under her Sisterdeep alias, Tanisha moves fluidly between deep listening and dancefloor settings.

Nadeem Tiafau Eshraghi is an artist of Sāmoan and Persian heritage, based in Narrm and a part of the MiE team. Under their 'Enter' invitational, they collage sounds from across contexts to make soundtracks for every feeling.
