Description

Germaine Tailleferre Petite Suite (1957)

Piano Concerto to be announced December 2026

Beethoven Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92

Pablo Urbina - Conductor

Winner of the National Concerto Competition - Piano

Escape to a world of folk and fancy with Germaine Tailleferre’s Petite Suite (1957). One of the most successful female French composers of the 20th century, Tailleferre was the only non-male member of the French composers' circle, Les Six: a group of early 20th-century composers who lived in Paris and challenged the status quo of the traditional French orchestral scene. Made up of three short, twinkling movements, Petite Suite was composed for a small orchestra in Paris in 1957.

For our first Lamb & Hayward Masterworks of the 2027 Season, we welcome the winner of the 2026 National Concerto Competition – Aotearoa New Zealand’s most distinguished classical competition for talented musicians under the age of 25 years. The Competition provides an opportunity to perform, a place to celebrate talent, and a platform to launch national and international careers.

Celebrating the bicentenary of his death, we present Beethoven’s big, bold, and triumphant Symphony No.7. Composed between 1811 and 1812, while Napoleon was planning his military campaign against Russia, Symphony No.7 is a wild, witty, and vibrant piece that turned heads from the first time it was played. Described by Richard Wagner as the "apotheosis of the dance”, this work is also known as the Dance Symphony due to its bright, driving rhythms, rather than sweeping melodies. Symphony No.7 is Beethoven changing the course of history, once again.
