Schools are complex organisations. Inherently human focused, their success is the consequence of the quality of the relationships that exists within and beyond school walls. The quality of these relationships can support school improvement, yet leaders working in this space must have more than knowledge of pedagogical and assessment theory, as it is the cultural factors that can impact upon teacher practice and student learning. In this session, participants will be introduced to several interrelated concepts that enhance school culture and connectedness. By exploring Social Capital, Collective Teacher Efficacy, Teacher Agency, Teacher Wellbeing and Self-Determination Theory, participants will begin to develop strategies that support leadership practice, staff relationships, and student outcomes.

About the Facilitators

Dr Jenni Donohoo is a best-selling author, researcher, and facilitator with more than 15 years’ experience in leading school change. Jenni is also on secondment to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Branch in the Ontario Ministry of Education. Here, she works alongside system and school leaders in order to improve the quality professional learning and collaboration in schools and districts.

Dr. Tim O’Leary is Founding Consultant at Educational Data Talks, and an Honorary Fellow at The University of Melbourne. Tim’s research interests lie in interrogating data to improve school outcomes, with a focus on the areas of teacher feedback, clarity, and agency.

Dr. Anna Dabrowski is a senior research fellow at The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and co-founder of Educational Data Talks. An experienced researcher, facilitator and coach, Anna’s research interests lie in teacher wellbeing, social capital, and school connectedness.
