    Event description

In this course, you will learn about the abundantly diverse ecosystem of the California Desert from an Indigenous perspective.

This is a leisurely activity - less than 2 miles with little or no elevation gain, shade and seating may be available.

Elizabeth Paige is a Desert naturalist and a member of the Torres Martinez Band of Cahuilla Indians. She has worked with organizations such as the Mojave Desert Land Trust, Coachella Valley Conservation Commission, and Cactus to Clouds Foundation. She also serves as a cohort on the 2021 Desert Keepers Council for the National Parks Conservation Association. She is dedicated to cultural preservation and advancing Indigenous people working in science and conservation.

This course is part of the Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate program.

Learn about the abundantly diverse ecosystem of the California Desert from an Indigenous perspective. Participants will be introduced to cultural landscapes, ethnobotany, Indigenous peoples' use of natural resources, and the ways Indigenous people incorporate the environment into all aspects of their daily lives.

We will discuss the medicinal and ceremonial use of plants, cultural landscapes, and suggested conduct therein, Indigenous people’s role in traditionally and currently desert ecosystems and the importance of knowing the complex history of the lands we call home. We’ll spend some time in the classroom before walking around the campground. Participants must bring the following items for your course: 10 desert essentials, lunch, snacks, and 2-3 liters of water!

Desert Institute offers some classes for credit through UC Riverside Extension. If you complete 12 units of our 400-level classes, you will earn a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate! If you take this class, you will earn XX units towards a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate. Learn more on our website: https://joshuatree.org/desert-...
