ASHFIELD: Culturally Responsive Practice in a Disability Context

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

FACE-TO-FACE TRAINING (SSI ASHFIELD)

Workshop description

As of December 2022, only 9.2% of nationally approved NDIS plans were for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, well below the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) expected 21%. The reasons for this include both barriers to access that affect people living with disability more broadly and the unique experience of disadvantage that comes with the intersection of living with disability and being from a CALD background.

This workshop explores the role of cultural beliefs and values, unconscious bias and intersectionality when working with people with disability from CALD backgrounds. It will help you gain a better understanding of how culture informs understandings of disability and how being culturally responsive will provide a service that is respectful of and relevant to the beliefs, practices, culture and linguistic needs of service users/participants.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on their own cultural identities, beliefs and values
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the intersection of living with a disability and coming from a culturally and linguistically diverse background
  • Recognise different explanatory models
  • Identify barriers to accessing disability support for humanitarian entrants
  • Incorporate person-centred principles and culturally responsive practice

*Light refreshments will be served. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements*
