Overview

This two-day training will give you foundations for working within a culturally responsive trauma informed framework. Content covers neurobiology, Aboriginal worldviews, trauma informed care and worker wellbeing. Held on 1-2 May 2025.

• Knowing why and how to provide trauma informed care in a culturally responsive way
• A good balance of theory, current context and frameworks to support your practice
• Justice driven trauma informed practice tools and skills
• An understanding of how to design your service and provide services in ways that don’t re-traumatise people

About the facilitators:

Rowena Lawrie: Rowena is the Director and Founder of Yamurrah, leading a collective of over 30 First Nations professionals specialising in areas such as social work, law, psychology, and trauma care. With three decades of experience as a clinical social worker, Rowena is dedicated to addressing systemic trauma and promoting healing in Indigenous communities. Her approach combines her expertise in social work, law, and neuroscience to deliver holistic and evidence-based solutions. A proud Wakka Wakka and Wiradjuri descendant with ties to sacred Darkinjung Country, Rowena’s work is deeply influenced by her cultural roots. Recognised as the Aboriginal Social Worker of the Year in 2023, she continues to drive positive change through her leadership, advocacy, and academic research.

Yatungka Gordon: Yatungka is a proud Goreng Goreng, Kabi Kabi, and Munanjali woman committed to community empowerment and justice. With qualifications in education, human services, and trauma counselling, she has spent decades championing the rights of trauma survivors. As Executive Officer of Breaking Silent Codes, Yatungka leads efforts to confront sexual abuse and advocate for survivors, engaging on both national and international stages, including the United Nations. Known for her compassion and cultural sensitivity, she delivers trauma-informed training to empower organisations and communities, fostering resilience and creating meaningful change.

Due to the popularity of this training, we ask that only two staff members from the one program attend. We will develop a waitlist and closer to the training allocate additional places where we can. Current capacity is at 20 participants.
