Cumberland Beekeepers Club - meet the varroa development officers

Event description

Ross Graham, the Varroa Development Officers (VDOs) who will be working in your local area will join our meeting this month.

As you are aware the Varroa Mite Response has moved from an Emergency Response to Transition to Management. The aim of the Transition to Management is to increase resilience and minimise ongoing impacts of Varroa mite for the bee industry and pollination reliant industries. This outcome will be achieved by slowing the spread, building industry resilience, providing management options and support for pollination security.

The role of the VDOs is to assist beekeepers and bee clubs to increase their knowledge, skill, and confidence in managing Varroa.  Some of the areas where we can assist are:

  1. How to monitor for Varroa mite using one of the nominated surveillance methods.
  2. How to determine mite loads.
  3. The different types of control methods available whether it be cultural, mechanical, and chemical.
  4. Implementing and managing a yearly integrated pest management plan.
