Curlew Evolution Soundscape Launch
Event description
Curlew (Gill Higgins she/her) is excited to welcome you to the launch of Evolution; an ambient electronic soundscape with elemental chapters, inspired by ancient sound healing practices and connection with nature.
This special immersive event has surround sound and 360° visuals that have been inspired by her work in human stem cell engineering, and her fascination with nature.
Evolution is the culmination of her improvisations on modular synthesisers, at the Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound (GLOSS) ran by Lewis Cook (Free Love), as part of their Introduction to Electronic Music course (ITEM).
Gill has performed as a session musician alongside some Scotland's finest musicians; Alice Allen, Andrew Wasylyk, Audrey Tait (Franz Ferdinand), Johnny Scott (Chvches), Laura Wilkie (Kinnaris Quintet), Pedro Cameron (Man of the Minch), and Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai).
As Curlew, she has supported the Twilight Sad, and played on tour with Honeyblood, Carla J. Easton and Andrew Wasylyk/Tommy Perman.
Her Earth chapter Evolution was included in the SoundThought exhibition as part of Glasgow Science Festival, in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens '24.
“...it is a nigh on silent packed audience that is hooked as she skilfully and beautifully blends layers of vocal and music through use of loop pedals...her set is a bewitching one.” Geoff Shaw, Resound
To open the night Curlew is delighted to announce Special Guest Dawn Coulshed
"Dawn Coulshed has one of the most sophisticated voices that I’ve ever covered. I can’t really think of a better word for the tone and style than she presents..." Ear to the Ground Music
Dawn Coulshed (she/her) is an ever-evolving vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Highlands of Scotland.
She studied Classical Piano and then jazz voice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland "Every note she sings is, quite frankly, outstanding” (A1234 blog). Here she continued to explore improvisation and performed with several ensembles including the European jazz workshop as part of the Edinburgh jazz festival.
As a solo artist Dawn released self-produced singles which had music blogs comparing her to Joni Mitchell and Maggie Rogers. Dawn’s arrangement of her own song ‘Sing for us’ was performed by the Roundhouse Choir as part of BBC 6 Music Festival 2020 in Camden, London.
