    Event description

Design Assembly presents the 2024 module of Johnson McKay's ever-popular Te Ao Māori workshops.

Johnson has updated the content for this year's full-day workshop to keep it current and make it relevant to everyone; whether you are just starting out on your Te Ao Māori journey or have attended his workshops in the past.

You will enjoy the inspirational and hospitable surroundings of the amazing Te Noho Kōtahitanga Marae at Unitec's Mt Albert Campus and come away with new insights and knowledge about incorporating Te Ao Māori into your design practice.

    Feedback from previous workshops

"Really loved the workshop. I wish I had been able to do the second day. I feel like it was a great day, and really want to do more now. Will be looking out for more workshops to attend. I would definitely recommend it to others."

"The best course or workshop I've been to in 10 years. Informed, engaging and hyper-authentic presenters in Johnson and Sarai."

Here is the outline for Redesigning Aotearoa 2024

Ira workshops are a space devoted to dynamic exchange of insights and expertise for delivering brands, products, service and experiences through a te ao Māori lens. Delivered by Ira, a leading strategic brand and creative agency, Redesigning Aotearoa helps build a vibrant knowledge community, inspired by the wisdom and creativity of te ao Māori.

By 2050 1/3 young people in New Zealand will be Māori. Our systems and institutions presently cater to a non-Māori majority, which have historically excluded Māori. Brave organisations are going through transformation to better serve and engage the future leaders of Aotearoa. This workshop explores key case studies and principles in how to support this cultural transformation through:

    - Best practice in culturally-meaningful brand strategy that respects the role of indigenous rights and Māori as strategic partners.

    - Building strong work cultures and experiences to harness the potential of diverse people to deliver better together.

    - Culturally authentic inclusion of Māori visual language, te reo Māori and storytelling to better express an inclusive Aotearoa and engage Māori audiences.

    - The role of tikanga Māori in the co-design and delivery of culturally impactful and authentic work.

    - How to create processes that protect against cultural appropriation and safe protection of cultural taonga.
