What is Dance Alchemy?

Dance Alchemy is a practice of embodied transformation of heavy emotional energy into elevated emotions through movement, breath, meditation and social connection. Dance Alchemy intends to promote healing, inspiration and well-being for individuals and groups.

Dance Alchemy sessions

Alchemy is the art of purification, maturation and transmuting certain materials, most commonly from base metals into precious metals such as gold. The aim of these endeavours was for healing and immortality.

Alchemists from the ancient worlds developed theories, practices, terms, and techniques that incorporated the base elements (water, earth, fire, air, and aether), likely the birthplace of science.

Modern alchemy explores the exoteric (practical applications) and esoteric (spiritual aspects) elements. In combination, they are complimentary - like the mind-body-soul connection.

What to expect

Dance Alchemy is a group practice for adults of all ages, genders, and dance abilities. It is a safe space where judgment is left at the door, and open-minded exploration of emotional diversity is encouraged.

The group will explore internal awareness, movement and connection practices on a personal level and group and partner work. We will explore the embodied experience and communication of safety, consent, trust and boundary setting as a basis for deepening connection and celebrating life.

Dance Alchemy incorporates psychology, dance, yoga and creative expression. You could expect solo preparation through breath, visualisation and grounding in the body. The group will then connect through an opening circle and a range of fun activities in pairs that inspire improvised dance to create a state of heart coherence.

Heart coherence is a state of flow that feels likened to “being in the

zone”. Scientific studies show that heart rhythms become more consistent whilst cultivating elevated emotions such as love, compassion and gratitude when compared with being in a prolonged state of fear, stress or anger. This flow state is associated with improved well-being, mental clarity, emotional regulation and mindfulness. Heart coherence can also occur between groups of people who are in rhythm with one another.
