What is Forró?
Forró is a popular social partner dance from the northeast of Brazil, which is still to this day deeply interwoven with peoples' way of life.
Take your imagination on a journey to a party by the beach. You are dancing barefoot with your friends in the sand, finishing off the last of your Brazilian barbeque as the sun begins to rise in the morning.
Imagine a small group of musicians, your friends, laughing and smiling as they play classic tunes that you know and love, experimenting and finding new colour and flavour in the music each time they play.
Celebrations in Brazil all involve good food, good music, and dance. Dance allows you to connect, laugh, and dance with your local community as well as people people from far and wide, dancing the same steps in rhythm, in time, creating new memories as you explore and express with your body.
All of this is possible through Forró.
Although I am not Brazilian, I want to acknowledge the deep link Forró still holds to its roots, and invite more people to enjoy this wonderful dance and genre of music.
The Classes:
Technique BOOTCAMP: is for people with a background in Forró dancing. We will be reviewing and re-understanding the moves you already know, allowing them to sit more easefully in your body and with the music.
This class will help you understand how to embody good technique to dance safely, musically, and respectfully, opening up the possibilities to more freely experiment with your dance and connect more deeply as we progress.
Beginners: is for those curious about Forró – no prior knowledge is required. You do not need to have a partner to join us. In fact, we will all be learning how to lead and follow, so there are no "men's" parts and "women's" parts - you will learn to do it all!
Be open to dancing with people of all genders.
Our Values:
This is a queer friendly, open, & welcoming environment. No creeps allowed! We respect one another's expression, cultures, boundaries, safety, and personal space. We communicate openly and talk about the issues that come up through the process of dancing and learning a new skill. We are grateful for and celebrate Brazilian culture and always work to better understand the roots and many cultural aspects of Forró.
Please note, that Eloise reserves the right to ask participants to leave the class at any time if they are not upholding our values.
If you have any questions or concerns, you are always welcome to come and talk with Eloise, as I take creating a safe environment for all very seriously.
FAQs:
Why are there 2 Come and Try Weeks?
These are to give you opportunity to drop in, check out the classes and see if it is right for you without needing to commit. You never know how something will go unless you give it a try, you may surprise yourself that you like it!
I'm not sure if I can make it every week for Term 1, can I just come when I want?
Consistency is so important when learning a new skill. And so is having a safe environment filled with familiar faces in which to learn. Therefore, I ask people to commit to just 4 weeks of learning to create a strong, supportive class environment, and allow you to see real improvements in your own dancing.

I look forward to seeing you in class on Monday!
Lots of Love,
Eloise xx
