Dance On Loan – Rebecca Jensen

Dance On Loan is a dance movie club hosted by Temperance Hall Front Studio Resident, Oliver Savariego. For each instalment of Dance On Loan, we gather to celebrate an influential artist in the Naarm dance community, watch a screening of a past work, and have open discussions. 

Our first guest artist to loan a dance is Rebecca Jensen, sharing her recent work 'Slip' created with Aviva Endean.

During his residency Oliver is developing ‘Slapdash’ a solo dance work that rips, crumples, cuts, shoves, layers and smashes together movement materials sourced from other artist’s work. Dance on Loan seeks to acknowledge stolen materials and provoke conversation surrounding choreographic authorship, extrapolating relationships between choreographers, collaborators, and performers.

SLIP, Rebecca Jensen with Aviva Endean

In Slip, dance and sound interconnect in a duet between dancer Rebecca Jensen and musician Aviva Endean. Central to Slip is Foley art, a sound-effect technique used in film, where sounds on screen are recreated in post-production using unlikely objects and body movements in a practice of substitution. Slip connects the illusion of Foley to the complexity of our present moment. Layers of data mediate our daily experiences, and invisible processes stretch the spaces between what we consume, and what goes on behind the scenes. Pairings are pulled apart and abstracted, entanglements are simplified, severed, and rewired to the point of absurdity. Slip urges us to refocus our attention, as we unwittingly fall out of sync.

Originally created as a short piece for the Keir Choreographic Award in 2022, Slip was developed into a full-length work, premiering at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre, Naarm/Melbourne in 2023 as part of FRAME.

20 minute iteration: Keir Choreographic Award 2022

REBECCA JENSEN is a dancer, choreographer and teacher, born in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) in 1988 and based in Narrm. Her work spans theatres, galleries and unconventional spaces, alongside participatory projects and video. She works through dance, utilising it’s equally speculative and practical qualities to, encourage reflection, connection and transformation.
Her work has been presented at Tempo Festival (2019, 2024), Nelson Arts Festival (2024), FRAME Biennale (2023), INDANCE Sydney Dance Company (2025), Kier Choreographic Award (2016, 2022), Front Beach Back Beach (2022), CONTACT HIGH, Gertrude Glasshouse (2021) and PAGEANT New York (2025), Blindside Gallery (2021), College Dance, La Biennale di Venezia (2018) and Dance Massive (2015, 2017). With Sarah Aiken she has co-directed participatory dance project Deep Soulful Sweats, presented across Australia and internationally since 2013.
Jensen has worked extensively as a performer with choreographers including Jo Lloyd, Lucy Guerin Inc, Shelley Lasica, Harrison Ritchie Jones, Lee Serle, Sandra Parker and Adam Linder. She is a DanceWEB scholar (2015), Australia Council Cité internationale des arts resident (2020), former Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc (2023), and a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist (2024–26).

OLIVER SAVARIEGO is a dancer and choreographer based in Naarm/Melbourne. His work questions and queers aesthetic values within dance, blends “high” and “low“ art and examines the lines between inspiration, reference and appropriation. He has been exploring transgressive choreographic perspectives since graduating from VCA in 2017, creating “Untitled” with Stuart Shugg in residence at Bennignton College, performing at Weisacres in New York City, and “Surface Area” with Chloe Arnott at Prahran Skate Park. He developed an online installation “Creche” in 2021, which was reworked for live performance in 2023 at Dancehouse. He is currently working on “Slapdash”, a solo work of choreographic collage, developed in residency at Lucy Guerin Inc.

Oliver has collaborated extensively within the Australian dance community. He is currently working with Lucy Guerin Inc, has performed with Phillip Adams Balletlab, Tasdance and Sydney Dance Company, and has worked with independent artists Shelley Lasica, Jo Lloyd, Melanie Lane, Sandra Parker, Harrison Ritchie Jones among many others. He is a proud collaborator in award winning projects, notably Phillip Adam’s Triptych which received 2023 Green Room Award for Best Ensemble, and Sandra Parker’s “Safehold”, winning the 2024 Green Room Award for Best Choreography. is a Front Studio Resident for 2026.

Temperance Hall's Front Studio Residency offers six independent artists an artist stipend and two months of exclusive, unrestricted access to the Front Studio at Temperance Hall. At the conclusion of their residencies, artists present a public showing of their work in development, and receive professional photographic documentation.

The 2026 Front Studio Residency has been supported by the Neilson Foundation, the City of Port Phillip, and private donors.
