Coffeehouse at Julie's first show: Dandelion Head + Sui Zhen!
Intimate, unusually low-tech acoustic shows with natural reverb in a cosy restaurant at the Abbotsford Convent, Sunday evenings around dinner time.
As free of sonic artifice or interference as is achievable, these will be acoustic concerts unlike any other you have experienced.
Whether it's the human voice, a guitar or a guzheng, every note you hear at these concerts will sound more natural and 'real' than you may have heard these artists sound before.
In the cosy atmosphere of Julie Restaurant, around sunset on a Sunday evening, a small audience will enjoy some beloved local and international artists presenting their music as they wrote it: each word and every note clearly audible. Any audible distraction will be removed (within reason) to help the artist's music reach your ears intact. The kitchen will go quiet. Fridges will switch off.
Inspired by the coffeehouse gigs of Greenwich Village and across the UK during the folk revival of the early 1960s, these performances are captured only in further-away microphones that reinforce the overall sound of the artist, without making them louder. Rejecting the larger-than-life sonic approach typical of modern concerts, these artists will not perform into close microphones for each instrument, nor will their instruments be plugged into the PA system. The restaurant's magnificent church-like ceiling will provide all the reverb.

Perhaps most importantly of all - in the spirit of a real coffeehouse, there will be complimentary "bottomless cup" coffee!

J. Blynn (Dandelion Head) has toured internationally both with his own music and playing for artist such as Lucius, Richard Marx and Sui Zhen. Songwriting and production credits include: Co-writing the second single from Sara Bareilles’s grammy nominated album The Blessed Unrest, as well as singles for Courtney Marie Andrews, Elliphant, Rose Elinor Dougall (The Pipettes), Say Lou Lou, Matt Simons, Set Mo, Jenny O, Roofeeeo (TV on the Radio, Buddy), Pelle (The Hives), Emma Louise, Sui Zhen, Sammy Brue, Banoffee and Rogue Wave.
Sui Zhen
Becky Sui Zhen Freeman is a Chinese-Malaysian ‘Australian’ artist, musician and creative producer working across audio, visual and interactive mediums. She lives and works on unceded Wurundjeri land. Her musical project Sui Zhen examines loss on multiple levels, from the death of loved ones to the widespread societal tendency to disappear within the 1’s and 0’s of modern life's tech-driven obsessions. From the banal pastel dystopia of the Secretly Susan era’s music videos to the invention of Linda, a ghostly apparition in the Losing, Linda LP, Becky’s cinematic, surreal and staged landscapes situate her unique take on pop music within its own uncanny terrain. Becky’s most recent LP is a collaboration with Chinese-Australian guzheng player and composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌.Their debut collaborative record Origin of You centres around the continual shift in an individual’s understanding of identity and of the self – coming to terms with who you are, where you are from, and where you will go. It is about birth, life and death. It is also about transformation: from daughter to woman, woman to mother, outsider to friend. Becky’s most recent release under Sui Zhen is the 13 min track 'Sleepless' which was written between the death of her mother and the death of her firstborn son. Despite the weight it carries, it is a testament of emotional liberation and resilience in the face of life's hardships. Outside her musical projects, Becky hosts a monthly show on NTS Radio and works as the Sound and Music Supervisor for Art Processors. In this role, she collaborates with arts and cultural institutions to meaningfully incorporate sound, voice and music into the visitor experience, with a decolonial imperative.

- Does ticket include food and drink?
No. Food, drink & desserts are in abundance, however, you will need to order and pay for these separately on the night. However, "bottomless cup" coffee is free!
- Can I talk during the show?
Try not to. You wouldn't want to, anyway. There will be plenty of time to talk before, between, and after the artist's sets.
- Are kids allowed?
Yes, with supervision. If they'll need a seat, they'll need a ticket. If they can't remain quiet and seated during the performances, they should not come. Material performed may not be child-appropriate. Consider hearing protection for children, even at quieter gigs.
- What time is the show?
Unless otherwise stated in the event's page... Doors at 6pm First set (of two) at 6.30pm
- Will there be tickets available on the door?
Yes, but only if there are any left. These are not big concerts. Booking ahead highly recommended. Some events will cost less at presale than on the door.
- What is your refund policy?
100% refundable until 1 day before the event.
- Are seats allocated?
No. Choose your seat/table on arrival. Please be open to sharing your table with people you do not know.
