Event description

Spence Club is proud to collaborate for the first time ever with the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) to present a special networking event for members and non-members: Dangerous Women.

We’ll have the exclusive opportunity to hear from Tansy Curtin, AGSA's Assistant Director - Artistic Programs, about the groundbreaking exhibition: Dangerously Modern: Australian Women Artists in Europe 1890–1940 which highlights the vital role of 50 trailblazing female Australian artists in the development of international modernism.

These artists belonged to an unprecedented wave of women who travelled from Australia to Europe at the turn of the twentieth century - prevailing against centuries of social constraints - to pursue international careers.

Tansy will speak to us about the exhibition themes, artists and artworks, and also tell us about her impressive career pathway in a highly competitive field. Our discussions will focus on the bravery and spirit of these pioneers, who continued to work towards their ambitions despite resistance, opposition and self-doubt.

We'll shine a light on why these women may have been considered 'dangerous' and discuss ways to carry on in the face of fear and doubt in your own career.

The evening will also shine a spotlight on the vibrant South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival 2025 which opens that night and will celebrate Adelaide artist Sue Kneebone, who has been known to describe her haunting aesthetic as akin to a ‘Feral Aussie Gothic’. Explore the AGSA collection, experience live performance art, hear poetry readings, engage in art workshops, and listen to SALA floor talks and live music.
