Darcy Gilkerson is a cellist, composer and improviser with a passion for contemporary classical and improvisatory chamber music. The principles of his creative output are to confront classical compositional practices to create music that is current, accessible, and allows for artistic freedom.

His album ‘Acteon’ was released last year to great acclaim. The album is the culmination of years of experimentation and exploration in coupling together classical compositional techniques and jazz improvisation. By playing with textures within the instrumental configuration, the album focuses on simple ideas that are expanded into broadly-layered conversations.

Darcy and his band have played at many venues across Melbourne over the years, including Tempo Rubato, Paris Cat and The Jazzlab. Acteon is regularly aired on the radio stations such as PBS and Joy FM and was featured in Dingo Jazz Magazine. Following the album’s launch at The Jazzlab in March 2025, Darcy and his band embarked on a launch tour across Victoria, NSW and ACT.

Darcy is currently on tour, performing in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth. He is joined by Matt Steele on keys, Dan Waddingham on guitar, Monty Shnier on bass and Ollie Cox on drums.

As a queer composer-performer, Darcy's music explores themes of self-discovery, empowerment, trans love and the ever-present ebb and flow between pain and joy. Darcy’s goal is to invite his audience into a musical conversation and to engage in an exchange of emotion between performer and listener.
