Event description

The sun descends behind the escarpment, the coast folds into shadow, something stirs.

Join us for the darkest crossing, Dark Scarp celebrates the death and rebirth of the sun as we gather in the deepest belly of winter where fire speaks, bodies move, and sound reverberates through cliff and skin. It’s a night where time slips sideways, where the familiar becomes strange, and the elements are not tamed but honoured.

Dark Scarp invites you into the ritual. Into a dreamscape of music and performance of all those who live and feel their winter under the Illawarra escarpment.

The day begins at 11am with an opening ceremony of smoke and acknowledgment, followed by the Mass Gathering of the Light yoga on the bowling green. From there, we drift into music, workshops, and performance as we move toward the crescendo of sunset behind the escarpment at 3pm. As twilight takes hold, we go deeper—into skeletal slide piano, a lantern parade, and the burning of the effigy. Then, in full darkness, we dance—surrounded by an eclectic mix of drum beaters and music makers.

This festival is a community event hosted by the Wombarra Bowlo and you are invited. Special early release price of $33 for members and locals, $45 for late release and on the door.
