FREE EVENT - REGISTRATION ONLY

Join us for the Pride March – an iconic and important event in any Pride festival. While a celebration of progress and difference, our Pride March this year will be in protest of LGBTQIA+ rights that are still being questioned, challenged and denied here in the NT, across Australia and the globe. This year, we march with the following in mind:

· There is still no LGBTQIA+ information included on the Australian census

· LGBTQIA+ people are six times more likely to experience depression than their straight peers

· Discrimination justified by religion is still legal in the NT and other states in Australia

· Trans youth are 15 times more likely to attempt suicide than their cisgender peers

· There is a lack of gender-affirming care for gender diverse people especially in the NT and other rural or remote areas

· Conversion therapy is still legal in the NT, NSW, SA, WA and Tasmania

· There are no laws in Victoria, SA, or WA to protect hatred in the public sphere against LGBTQIA+ people – as seen recently during the neo-Nazi marches in Victoria

· The only law to defer non-urgent medical intervention for intersex individuals is in the ACT, and it was only passed this year

· Overseas, there are still death penalties for LGBTQIA+ individuals

· There is a war on our trans community going on in America (there have been 493 anti-transgender bills proposed with roughly 20 of them passing)

This list is not exhaustive, but it gives a glimpse of the issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community. We would like to invite you to march with us and consider these issues, as well as your own. Now is the time to speak as a voice of the LGBTQIA+ community or an active ally.

March will commence in Civic Park from 2pm. There will be pre-march activities in Civic Park from 12pm.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

As part of your entry you are required to include your organisation name so that it is clearly visible to spectators.
Your entry is not to be used as a promotional opportunity or political platform for your business or organisation.
All entries will be considered by the Organisers and acceptance or otherwise will be advised in writing, including those involving vehicles. All decisions made will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
The Organisers retain the right to modify any aspect of an entry and also the right to position each entry in the March as it sees fit, giving consideration to content, theme and possible impacts upon other entrants.
Bike riding, skateboarding, rollerblading and scooter riding are permitted in the March, however appropriate personal protective equipment including helmets must be worn.
Electric scooters are not permitted however mobility scooters as means of mobility aid are permitted.
The movement of the March will be controlled by designated marshals along the March route. Participants must adhere to the directions of these individuals at all times and failure to do so may result in removal of your entry from the event.
All participants in the March are expected to perform courteously, in good taste and with their own safety and that of other participants and spectators in mind at all times.
All March participants are required to have or able to obtain Public Liability Insurance to cover their entry in the March.

VEHICLE ENTRIES

All vehicles must follow the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) Road Users’ Handbook guidelines.

Ensure the length of the entire Float (including the vehicle used for towing or walkers) does not exceed 12.5 metres.
Ensure the total height of the Floats, including the height of any persons sitting or standing on the Float does not exceed 4.5 metres at its highest point (Car (C), Light Rigid (LR)).
Ensure the vehicle size is limited to 8 tonnes.
Vehicles not complying with the V13 Vehicle Dimensional limits (including load) will need to obtain a permit from the Department of Transport. Your application will have to be submitted through the Organiser via the email address: secretary@topendpride.com.au.
Only vehicles and rigid trucks will be permitted entry into the March. This means that no semi-trailers, heavy combinations or larger will be allowed to enter.
Registration and Comprehensive Vehicle Insurance need to be provided for all vehicles that are being used in the March.

Advertising of any products, including alcoholic drinks or prohibited substances, on vehicles or by participants is strictly forbidden unless agreed by the Organiser.
Any vehicle used in the March must be driven or operated by a suitably qualified and fully licensed operator.
Please note under no circumstances will drivers with a learner or provisional licence be allowed to drive any vehicle in the March.
The SPEED LIMIT for this event must not exceed no more than 5km/h (Walking speed).
Passenger safety/ distractions: It is important to stay focussed while driving and avoid becoming distracted. If you become distracted while driving, you could cause a crash.
Dangerous driving in the March Assembly Area is not acceptable.
Alcohol, drugs, medications, and driving: Do not allow alcohol or take any substances that could affect your driving.
Excessive noise from March vehicles is prohibited, e.g. the revving of engines, horns, sirens etc.
If participants are on the back of a moving vehicle/trailer, consideration must be given for adequate fall protection for participants including when March stops and starts.
Participants accept full responsibility for their own safety when taking part in the March and/ or travelling in moving vehicles.
An animal-drawn vehicle or an animal that is being ridden is considered to be a vehicle under the road rules. A person riding an animal is considered a rider and, for most road rules, the term driver includes riders.
As part of the event, you will be sharing the road with pedestrians. As a driver, you are legally required to give way to pedestrians at crossings and when entering or leaving a driveway. However, you should always be prepared to stop for pedestrians.
Police, fire and emergency services: When you hear a siren or see the flashing blue or red lights of an emergency vehicle (such as a police officer, fire or ambulance vehicle) you must give way. This means get out of the way, so the emergency vehicle has a clear passage through traffic.
There will be a Traffic Warden at the March assembly area. The warden will ensure the Terms & Conditions are adhered to. Failure to comply with any of these Conditions will result in the entrant being asked to leave and may jeopardise your ability to participate in the March in future years.
The order of procession and a description of all entries will be provided to the March Commentators prior to the event, therefore no changes can be made on the day.
Arrival times will be allocated prior to the event.
You will be directed to stand at a specific location on your arrival. If you change or move from this location you will be asked to leave the assembly area and will not be permitted to participate in the March.
All children involved in the March must be supervised at all times.
Private vehicles that are not participating in the March must not be parked in the March Assembly Area.

CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN THE MARCH/MOVING VEHICLES

Children participating in the March are to be supervised by adults at all times.
Children are not to leave a vehicle, be removed from a vehicle or be placed onto a vehicle while that vehicle is moving.
Parents or guardians responsible for children participating in the March must be at the finishing location no later than [time].
March entrant coordinators (individual groups) are responsible for all children in their group until they are collected by a parent or guardian.
No child is to be left unattended at the finishing location.
Children up to eight years old should hold an adult’s hand on the footpath, in the car park, or when crossing the road.
Children up to 10 years old should be supervised in the traffic environment and hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road.

THROWING OR GIVING AWAY ITEMS DURING THE MARCH

The throwing or giving away of any object (including lollies) by March Participants is considered dangerous and is strictly prohibited. Children can be seriously injured by running in front of oncoming vehicles while trying to retrieve lollies/giveaways. Anyone violating this rule will be removed from the March immediately.
This includes the discharge of water from water pistols, blowing bubbles, handing out of balloons, lollies or promotional items.
Any giveaways or flyers should be handed out after the March has completed its route, or outside of the March route, and not during the March.

USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY / VIDEO FOOTAGE

By participating in the Darwin Pride 2023 March, you agree to the Organiser and local media taking photographs and video footage of your entry, including individuals under 18 years of age, on the day of the event. You further acknowledge and agree that the Organiser has the authority to publish and use this material, in whole or in part, for advertising or marketing purposes for this and any subsequent events, and as part of the Organiser’s future general marketing and communication activities.
