Does current progress in AI offer a path toward the singularity - when machines can think for themselves and design new machines better and faster than humans can? Or is it all just a very fancy search function and random word salads? 

Bill Gates says that humans won’t be needed “for most things” in ten years, Geoffrey Hinton puts the chance that AI wipes out humanity at 10-20%. And yet Yann LeCun's thinks "Machine learning sucks” and is decades away from a semblance of sentience. What do UWA’s researchers think?
