A Basil’s Table event hosted by 888 Co-operative Causeway and supported by RSA Oceania (and thanks also to our friends at the Fabian Society). UK policy thinker David Coats unpacks the Starmer government, Corbyn’s new party project, and how co-ops can form part of a modern social-democratic agenda. Practical lessons for Australia + Q&A. Kelvin Club, Wed 5 Nov.

Basil’s Table - the 888 Co-operative Causeway series exploring the social economy welcomes UK policy thinker David Coats (WorkMatters Consulting) for a timely briefing on British politics and the practical role co-ops can play in rebuilding a fair economy.

With the Starmer government settling into office and a new Corbyn-aligned project taking shape, what’s real and what’s rhetoric - and what can Australia adapt?

Drawing on decades across labour markets, industrial relations and public policy, David will examine the early record of the Starmer government, the debate between a “third way” and a more democratic, community-led economy, and the UK’s promise to expand the co-operative sector. Expect sharp analysis - not slogans.
