Description

Join us in this hybrid (in-person and online) public seminar as Prof. Harriet Thomson (University of Glasgow, UK) and A/Prof. Alejandra Cortés (University of Chile) reveal how energy justice principles are being integrated into policy frameworks in Europe and Chile.

Energy justice in policy requires that policymakers carefully consider who will benefit, who will bear the costs, and whose voices will be heard in decision-making processes related to the low-carbon energy transition. Drawing on recent policy developments, our international speakers will explore how energy justice in Europe and Chile has evolved from rhetoric to implementation. Join us for a discussion on what these contrasting case studies suggest for achieving an equitable energy transition in Australia. The event is co-organised by Associate Professor Nicola Willand (RMIT University) and Dr Lee White (University of Sydney).

European reflections on building cross-sector capacity for energy justice Drawing on 15 years of European policy engagement, this talk reflects on how energy justice became institutionalised across energy and social policy. It shares lessons from building cross-sectoral networks and leading EU initiatives that transformed energy poverty from a niche concern into a core policy priority. Harriet is an applied interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of energy and social policy. She regularly supports national and supranational policymakers, most notably in co-founding the European Commission’s first EU Energy Poverty Observatory (2016-2020) and co-designing the intervention methodology for the European Commission’s forthcoming €87 billion Social Climate Fund.

  • A/Prof. Alejandra Cortés Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Universidad de Chile; Director of the Energy Poverty Network; Member of the NGO Energy Equity.

Chile’s pathway to energy justice: Progress and challenges Based on more than a decade of research and policy engagement by the Energy Poverty Network, this presentation reviews Chile’s efforts to incorporate energy poverty and energy justice into public policy, with a focus on the social housing retrofit programme. It discusses the role of academia in knowledge-based policymaking, as well as key barriers and challenges that continue to constrain effective action. Alejandra is an architect with over 15 years of experience researching the impacts of residential public policies on vulnerable communities. Her work focuses on the intersections of housing policy, energy efficiency, and energy poverty, with strong engagement in policy-oriented research. Secure your spot today!
