BOOK LAUNCH: The Day of Stolen Bicycles with Warren Bonett
Description
Join us at The Little Bookroom to celebrate the launch of The Day of the Stolen Bicycles, a heartfelt new picture book by Maria Testa, illustrated by Melbourne artist Warren Bonett.
The evening is a homecoming of sorts, with Warren returning to launch his debut US published picture book at the very bookshop where he once worked as a bookseller.
Arrive from 6.00pm to browse the shelves before we begin at 6.30pm.
Warren will be in conversation with Michael Earp, discussing the journey from sketchbook to finished book, what it takes for an Australian illustrator to be published in the United States, and the 2000 hours of work behind bringing this picture book to life. Several of Warren's original hand painted illustrations, and preparatory sketches will be on display giving you a chance to see the hand-painted illustrations before they were transformed and enhanced for the final printed pages. There will be time for questions, conversation and book signings after the discussion.
As the book is published in the United States, Australian stock is limited. We strongly recommend pre-ordering your copy when booking to guarantee one will be available for signing on the night.
The Day of the Stolen Bicycles explores the homelessness through the eyes of young Sam, and his classmates and teachers.
“An affecting, socially aware story that doesn’t flinch from hard realities” — Kirkus Reviews

About the Book:
Sam usually rides his bike to school, but today it is raining. During silent reading, Sam watches a parade of construction trucks out the classroom window. When Sam realizes his home in the park is being bulldozed, his teacher, Ms. Lee, goes with him to the park to save what they can. A powerful, moving story of a young homeless boy that highlights the personal impact of being unhoused and the effects of poverty.
