Event description

Dayenu's 25th Anniversary Celebration

Join us at Emanuel Synagogue to celebrate 25 years of Dayenu, Sydney's LGBT+ Jewish Organization. While we deal with so much antisemitism, Dayenu wants to bring joy and get our community together to celebrate the diversity and acceptance of our community.

Hear the story of Dayenu, enjoy a nosh, a glass of champagne, and a show by Dayenu’s own fabulous drag queen, Miss Fifi Glamcox. There will also be an exhibition of memorabilia and press articles from over the years.

Don't miss this special event. Let's come together and celebrate Dayenu's 25th Anniversary.

LOCATION.

Emanuel Synagogue, 7 Ocean Street Woollahra

When:
Sunday 9th February 2pm till 5pm

Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio OAM; A tireless Rabbi who has championed the cause of inclusion at Emanuel Synagogue and beyond, creating the strong bond Dayenu have with our Jewish Community. Rabbi Ninio continues to host Mardi Gras Shabbat services and dinners, as well as marching with Dayenu at the Mardi Gras Parade.

The Hon Justice Stephen Rothman

Vic Alhadeff OAM; As former CEO of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, Vic Alhadeff OAM has dedicated his career to championing human rights. And as editor of the Australian Jewish News in 2000, he campaigned for the right of Jewish gays to be accepted. It was a watershed moment in the history of Sydney's Jewish gay community.

Dawn Cohen; co-founded Dayenu in 2000. As one of the few gay Jews willing to speak out, Dawn had been the public face of Jewish homosexuality in Sydney since 1990 when she debated   two Rabbis at Australia’s first Jewish public forum on homosexuality at the Hakoah club, winning the day with her passionate call not just for inclusion and acceptance of Jewish homosexuals   but for a warm Welcome Home.  She repeated that call in talks, articles and debates over the next decade in both gay and Jewish settings, culminating in her co-instigation of the ground-breaking and, at the time, controversial first Mardi Gras Shabbat Dinner at Shalom College in 2000, and the initial Dayenu float.

Wanda Kluke OAM; A survivor of the Holocaust Wanda was there in 1978 to witness the start of the Mardi Gras movement and will recount that fateful night. An enduring friend of the LGBTQ+ community, a member of Dayenu and the 78’ers.

Afterwards, refreshments and a light nosh will be provided in the Kiddush courtyard with Dayenu’s fabulous Drag Queen Fifi Glamcox performing a few of her favorite tunes.

An exhibition of original press articles from the Jewish and wider press will be on display and we hope you will find this a great time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones.
