Deaf Awareness Training & Auslan Class
Event description
This is the first of two programs accompanying the exhibition Embodied – A Deaf Perspective. Designed for hearing audiences, Claire Dunne, a Deaf awareness trainer and teacher, will guide participants through Deaf culture, history, and language.
This workshop moves beyond the basics to challenge common misconceptions and unpack barriers faced by the Deaf community. You will learn the meaning behind the word Deafhood and celebrate the richness of Deaf perspectives. Through storytelling, humour, and role-play, participants will explore effective communication strategies, learn how to work respectfully with Deaf audiences, artists, and interpreters, and practice key Auslan phrases for everyday use.
This is an open space to ask questions, share experiences, and gain a deeper understanding of what it truly means to connect with the Deaf community. Participants will leave ready to engage with Deaf individuals and understand the importance and potential of creating programs and events that are inclusive, accessible, and engaging.
After the workshop, participants will be better informed and able to engage more meaningfully with the exhibition Embodied – A Deaf Perspective.
This exhibition is supported in part by Deaf Connect and the Deaf Connect Grants & Sponsorship Program, and Northern Beaches Council as part of the Emerging Curator Program.
