Description

December brings another super moon, and the best meteor show of the year.

Learn about these events and how best to observe them in a talk illustrated by breathtaking 3D images to be presented at Woodford Academy on the evening of 29 November. This promises to be an engaging explanation of the last two major Astronomical events of the year.

The Geminid meteor shower is the biggest and brightest for the year. It is thought to originate from the debris of an Asteroid. The presentation explains this possible origin and how to see the shower at its best.

The December super moon coincides with a full moon at its closest approach to Earth. Besides appearing bigger and brighter than usual, the super moon marks enhanced influence of the moon on Earth. In the mountains we experience a brighter night, while on the coast it is marked by larger tides.

The talk will be presented by local astronomer, Dr Paul Payne, renown for his clear and accessible explanations of Astronomical phenomena and will be illustrated by state-of-the-art dynamic 3D graphics. Telescope viewing of the night sky will be available, weather permitting.
