Decolonial Botanical Garden Visit
Event description
Botanical Garden Visit
Colonial Botany
We will look at the colonial legacy that has shaped botany and the significance in our understanding of nature and knowledge. Botanical gardens that many of us plantlovers admire, actually evolved during colonial times. They were a symbol of domination over both the natural world and Indigenous cultures & knowledges. Not only cultures and people were exoticized by the colonizers, also plants were brought into isolation, removed from their rich Indigenous contexts.
Reconnecting with plants
During the tour there is the chance to connect with plants and to learn more about the relationships between plants, ourselves, and the land. Rethinking the ways we engage with botanical knowledge today is part of the reflections. Together we can envision botanical gardens and knowledges that honor African/ Indigenous perspectives.
