DEEP SOUND is a spatial and tonal sensory encounter with the ocean that explores more-than-human communication.
Artist Janenne Willis invites audiences to experience a site specific sound sculpture in or beside the ocean. Inspired by the musicality of ocean life and the resonance of underwater ecology, Deep Sound blends hydrophone feeds and spoken word into an original composition, amplifying the knowledge that nature communicates through meaningful sound.
Come and go as you please from the ocean-side experience. Pre-registrations for the in-ocean experience are essential and very limited.
The in-ocean experience involves snorkelling with waterproof headphones. You will need to bring your own snorkelling gear or hire it in advance of the day. You will be provided with headphones.
Deep Sound is an outdoor weather-dependent show. We will play in most weather conditions and may alter our location and / or timing if the sea, land or sky are unsafe. Up to date details will be shared on our website.

- I don't have my own snorkelling gear? Can I hire it?
Yes. For a fee. For all hire needs contact: info@academyofscuba.com We have made arrangements with Academy of Scuba to deliver your hire gear to the Mushroom Reef on the day. All you need to do is show up 15mins prior to your ticket time to collect your hire gear.
- Is this a free experience?
Yes, it is free. Pre-registrations are essential. If you would like to hire snorkelling gear, you can do so for a fee via Academy of Scuba, info@academyof scuba.com
- What snorkelling gear do I need to participate?

- Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes. This in-ocean experience is for competent swimmers and snorkelers only.
- How do I participate without snorkelling?
Deep Sound can be experienced either in or beside the ocean. If you would like to experience the work beside the ocean, the show is free and will be open between 830am and 1230pm on Saturday 24 January. No registrations required. For all accessibility details please visit deepseesurvey.com
